“The ultimate goal of my research is to make the metaphorical language barrier in Natural Language Processing yesterday’s problem”
“My current research is focussed on Metaphor Identification and Interpretation. The ultimate goal of my research is to make the metaphorical language barrier in Natural Language Processing yesterday’s problem. My work will identify a metaphor and then interpret the metaphor as its literal counterpart in English automatically. This means that the Machine Translation systems, for example, can easily translate an English text into other languages. Such techniques will help people from different cultures to better understand English metaphors when they use tools such as Google or Microsoft translator.”

“It may be over 500 years old but the quality of the research here is still at the forefront in Computing Science"
“I decided to come to the University of Aberdeen because of the reputation of the staff and the quality of teaching. The University has an outstanding reputation. It may be over 500 years old but the quality of the research here is still at the forefront in Computing Science. My supervisors, Dr. Chenghua Lin and Dr Frank Guerin, have been so supportive since I arrived. I am able to get support from the CLAN group. The support offered does not just come from academic staff however. Whether it be the career service, the accommodation support or AUSA; the support at the University of Aberdeen has been excellent. The facilities here are superb! I have been able to access the University’s super computer in order to fulfil my research plans. This has helped me to get my work recognised by a global audience. This has culminated in my work being presented at the ACL conference in Australia this summer.”
“The University of Aberdeen has helped me combine my business experience with my passion for technology”
“Upon graduating I hope to gain a post-doctoral position. I love researching and this would allow me to continue my studies. I am also planning to use my experience in business to start my own company. I previously worked for the Hodo group as a strategy manager. This experience means that I know what the industry needs and this has helped to shape my research. I want to bring A.I. technology into businesses and people’s daily lives in the future. The University of Aberdeen has helped me combine my business experience with my passion for technology.”
