“If the Energy Crisis is to be resolved it will be thanks to electrochemists”

“My research is based on energy storage, one of the biggest challenges arising from the increased reliance on renewables. The research in our group is oriented towards fundamental understanding, which goes hand in hand with applied research. We study the electrode-electrolyte interface by combining classical electrochemical techniques, such as voltammetry, with infrared spectroscopy, which provides information on any changes that chemicals undergo. My research is focused on the conversion of CO2 into combustible fuels using ionic liquids as electrolytes. The community of electrochemists is quite small, but it is one of upmost importance. If the Energy Crisis is to be resolved it will be thanks to electrochemists.”

“I always went to international schools growing up and I wanted to come to a University with an International network of students”

“After my undergraduate I wanted to improve my job prospects by studying a master’s with a focus on oil and gas. There is nowhere better to do that than Aberdeen. My Master’s experience made me want to remain at Aberdeen. Part of that course was a three month research project that could be based in academia or industry. I decided to work academically and this was what helped me decide to continue into research. I was particularly lucky that my supervisor, Dr Angel Cuesta, was looking for a PhD student at that time. I was impressed by the facilities and personnel at the university; the chemistry school has a team of excellent researchers here. I always went to international schools growing up and I wanted to come to a University with an International network of students.”

“I love the history and traditions of the University of Aberdeen”

“I like Aberdeen as it is not too big or chaotic, everything is in walking distance. I was never in doubt that I would be at home here. It has a great international community as well as a welcoming local population. I am part of a volleyball team. This has been great for meeting new people and interacting with the locals. I am also able to use the fantastic facilities at the Aberdeen Sports Village. I love the history and the traditions of the University of Aberdeen. The buildings and campus here is full of history; it is beautiful. The local countryside is outstanding. I have been able to travel to Braemar, Balmoral and Dunnottar castle.”

“The University of Aberdeen has helped me massively!”

“I hope to carry on my research by doing a post-doctorate. I would like to have this experience so that I can eventually choose whether I want to work academically or in industry. Initially, I want to stay in the field of electrochemistry, but learn new techniques and look at other areas within the field. I have been able to use the additional courses available such as the courses that help scientists make graphics to enhance our research and also help with giving presentations. The University of Aberdeen has helped me massively. It has shaped me professionally this will help me go and do the things I want to do.”
