“My hope is that my work will help policymakers make informed decisions regarding healthcare”

“My research is focused on studying the effects of early life health on later life outcomes. I am doing this by examining health factors, such as childhood obesity, to see the long term impact that this has on health. One factor that I am considering is whether the circumference of a child’s head can be used as an indication to their educational attainment ability. I am using software called stata in order to analyse data from the Aberdeen children of the 1950s and from the British cohort studies. One of the great advantages of studying in Aberdeen is the access to the UK’s extensive health records. My hope is that my work will help policymakers make informed decisions regarding healthcare. Potential investment in early life health care could save enormous expense in later life treatment."

"Although I was only here for a short time I knew that I wanted to come back to Aberdeen to complete my PhD”

“During my master’s course I was fortunate enough to be able to come to Aberdeen to complete my dissertation. Although I was only here for a short time I knew that I wanted to come back to Aberdeen to complete my PhD. I had known that I wanted to do a PhD since my undergraduate but I didn’t know where I wanted to it until I came here. I had become familiar with the city and the expertise that the University had to offer. I enjoy learning at an ancient University with such beautiful grounds.”

“Aberdeen has a great community spirit”

“Aberdeen is an easy city to live in. The University, my work and the city centre are all within walking distance of my home. Aberdeen has a great community spirit with the locals being friendly and welcoming to the large international population that come here to study. There is a large Nigerian population here and we have The Aberdeen Nigerian Research Group which I have benefited from.  It has been great for helping and supporting Nigerian students in their studies.  My Supervisors have also been so supportive. I meet with them on a monthly basis and they will help to guide me and challenge me in order to improve my research.”

“Studying at such an international University will help me in the global job market”

“Once I graduate I want to work for a consultancy firm in order to help with health policy making. I have been able to improve my communication skills so that I can effectively engage with people from all over the world. Studying at such an international University will help me in the global job market. I also hope to continue my research and expand on my current findings. I have been able to use the additional courses here to help me with literature reviewing, referencing work and working with data. I am very hopeful that these opportunities will help me once I have graduated and I know that no knowledge that I have gained here will be wasted.”
