Biography
Utibe Utin is a final year PhD researcher at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, under the supervision of Paul Hallett, Jo Smith, and Josie Geris. His doctoral research, titled "Soil Structure Dynamics and Its Interaction with Carbon Under Different Management Systems", explores how soil structural changes driven by management-induced carbon variations impact hydrological processes and carbon cycling.
The first chapter of his research focuses on modeling soil water retention curves (SWRC) under various tillage treatments. Utin has also developed a predictive model for estimating parameters of the Assouline model using bulk density and macroporosity data. This approach allows for the estimation of SWRC without the need for repeated, time-consuming, and costly measurements. Furthermore, his work involves integrating the effect of tillage and into RothC and the use of the new model to incorporate temporal changes in soil moisture on carbon turnover.
Utin is also a lecturer in the Department of Soil Science and Land Resources Management at the University of Uyo, Nigeria. Prior to beginning his PhD, he served as the Department's Examinations Officer and was also a board member and Examinations Officer for the Directorate of General Studies at the same university. Before joining the University of Uyo, he worked as an Agricultural Extension Agent with the Akwa Ibom Agricultural Development Programme and the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR).
He is a member of the British Society of Soil Science (BSSS), the Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN), and the European Geosciences Union (EGU).

Soil structure and its interaction with carbon dynamics under different management systems.
My research will attempt to achieve the following objectives:
- Modelling of soil water retention and structural dynamics under different tillage treatments
- Determination of the impact of carbon on soil structure and the resulting impacts to soil water retention dynamics
- Measurement of the impacts of soil organic carbon on water retention in the field over a growing season
- Modeling the hydrological impacts of soil carbon and subsequent impacts on carbon cycling
Funding and Grants
My PhD is funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), Nigeria
