Biography

Professor Susan Stokeld is the Director of Education for the School of Law. She is a Justice of the Peace and Honorary Sheriff for Grampian, Highlands & Islands, and Chair of the Fitness to Practice Committee for the Medical and Dental Schools at Aberdeen University. 

Susan joined the School of Law in March 2012. She is a qualified Scottish solicitor (now non practising) but previously worked in private practice in Glasgow and Aberdeen. Susan completed a Masters degree (Business and Economics) at Aberdeen University  Business School where she taught a wide range of management subjects and research methods courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate MBA level. Her doctoral research was conducted at Strathclyde University and her thesis addressed the performance and delivery of professional legal services. 

She is a member of Law Society for Scotland's Access to Justice Committee, and the Aberdeen Scottish Association for the Study of Offending. She sits on the Advisory Council to the Judicial Institute.  Susan is the Scottish National representative on the International Negotiation for Law Students organisation and an experienced judge at international competitions for law students on negotiation and client consultation.

Research

Research Overview

 

Susan's research interests lie in Criminal Justice Reform in Scotland and specifically in the area of the role and contribution of problem solving courts in Scotland and the rationale behind the problem- solving court initiative as an alternative to imprisonment sentencing options for persistent offenders and issues of domestic abuse, and the impact of the recent legislative reforms.

Susan also has an interest in negotiation and specifically in its role as an essential skill for the legal practioner.
