Research

Research Overview

My main area of research is under the umbrella of assessment within pedagogical research in healthcare programmes. 

Assessment is a key part of student’s life and we acknowledge that changes are required to improve student’s engagement whilst making sure that they are safe practitioners. As the university is embarking in a new curriculum review with new approaches to teaching based on a competency based dental education, our assessments practices are being influenced by this. 

Being a small Institute with small cohort of students allows us to be at the centre of multiple research opportunities including improving feedback practices, assessing student performance, program of assessments, mentoring students and policy making.

My research interests also include the oral health of elderly people living in nursing homes as well as preventive measures to promote oral hygiene to this population group. My research also links pedagogical research with special care patients, by means of understanding student's preparedness to undertake clinical treatment on this vulnerable group of patients, which will help improve out teaching suits for this specific area of clinical dentistry.

Current Research

My current research projects are:

  • The impact of COVID-19 on Assessment practices in UK dental schools. 
  • Feedback practices in health care programmes.
  • Standard setting methods in healthcare programs. 
  • Training and calibrating examiners for practical assessments and WPBA.
  • Dental student perception of the effectiveness of Special Care Dentistry Teaching in preparing them to treat patients independently
  • Learning styles and redesigning curriculums and assessments.

 

Collaborations

We have collaborated with the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya on pedagogical research projects.

Supervision

I am currently the main supervisor for a PhD student on the field of differential attainment in dental students in Scotland. 

I have supervised multiple MSc students on their final dissertation on the Masters in Public Health and also on the Master in Advanced Restorative Dental Practice.

During the summer I usually supervise undergraduate dental student on their summer scholarships with the following topics of pedagogical research in healthcare programmes and dental topics such as geriatric dentistry, prevention and removable prosthodontics.

Teaching

Teaching Responsibilities

I am the Education Lead for the Institute of Dentistry.

At the Institute of Dentistry I am the co-ordinator for the removable prosthodontic teaching.

I am a Senior Clinical Lecturer for the MSc in Advanced General Practice where I deliver the module of Removable Partial Dentures.

I also deliver teaching on the MSc in Medical Education on their module of Principles of Assessments in Clinical Education.

 

Non-course Teaching Responsibilities

I am a lecturer for the MSc in Special Care Dentistry at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya.
