Geography and Environment
Research interest focuses on Azerbaijan as an example of a country that heavily relies on fossil fuels. The project will explore Azerbaijan's potential to shift to renewable sources of energy. As such, it investigates a variety of economic, political, institutional and socio-cultural factors that enable and/or hamper the energy transition of Azerbaijan and its economy. Particular attention is paid to the various historical influences (such as the Soviet past of Azerbaijan) and how they determine the evolution of Azerbaijan’s energy system nowadays. In this respect, the project adopt an evolutionary perspective – namely the framework of evolutionary economic geography (EEG) – and will utilise a qualitative approach consisting of interviews with stakeholders and secondary data analysis. The findings which the project generates will prove beneficial to various policy-makers in Azerbaijan while the policy recommendations deriving from the project aims to inform future energy transitions in the country.
