Biography

Hikari Saito is a PhD student at University of Aberdeen and Kobe University in Japan. She completed her two masters at Aberdeen in 2018 with distinction, and Kobe in 2019 as the best law master student of the year.

In addition to particpation in international arbitration and mediation moot competitions, in 2017, she worked as an intern at one of leading arbitration institutions, Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. Furthermore, in 2019, she became the CEDR Accredited Mediator after completion of training programme at Kobe University.

Based on her strong research interests in international commercial dispute resolution, she presented her papers in relation to enforcement mechanisms of cross-border commercial judgments and mediation settlements at conferences oranigsed respectively by American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution (2021), Journal of Private International Law (2019), and Academy for International Business Transactions in Japan (2019, 2021).

In 2021, she was awarded a research grant, as an overseas researcher from the Institute of Intellectual Property, commissioned by Japan Patent Office. She and Professor Roy Partain is conducting research into the coordination problems caused by anti-common structures in intellectual property law settings as they relate to medical and pharmaceutical research on medical treatments and vaccines for future medical pandemics. She is further exploring how mediation can be used as a method to overcome these coordination problems to ensure effective achievement and delivery of these medical treatments and vaccines. The funded research  runs from September 2021 and terminate at the end of February 2022.

She belongs to the Centre for Private International Law and Centre for Commercial Law at the Law School.
