Research Overview

My principal field of research is the history of European nobilities. The questions that most interest me as a historian have to do with gender, power, and emotions. My publications in this field are based upon investigation in the private archives of noble families located in all parts of France. I write mostly about the post-1789 period, but the nature of the archival work I do involves handling documents produced from the Middle Ages to the late twentieth century. These archival sources, and the subject of nobility itself, challenge me to think frequently about medieval and early modern contexts as well as about contemporary ones.

Between 2010 and 2016 I undertook funded research on European co-operative businesses, with a particular focus on the agricultural sector, and mutual finance. My interests here lie in adaptation and innovation in co-operative enterprise, especially in rural areas. The research was supported by two Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. My work with co-operative businesses and development bodies, in Europe and abroad, has resulted in books and e-learning materials, public engagement events, conferences, and film making for the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives.
