I graduated BDS from Glasgow University in 1985. Following a year as a General Duties House Officer at Birmingham Dental School I worked a further 6 months there as a Senior House Officer. Thereafter a year as Resident Senior House Officer in Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics at The George Elliot Hospital covering Coventry and Warwick Hospitals gave me experience in Emergency, Outpatient and Inpatient care. I returned to Scotland to join a rural General Dental Practice in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire where I stayed for 3 years. During locum work in Community Dental Service in Kent and in Greenock I successfully sat Part 1 of Primary FDS however decided General Dental Practice was where my career would lie. I gained overseas experience 1990-91 in General Dental Practice in both North and South Island New Zealand before settling in Aberdeen’s West End for 20 years. Latterly I completed the NHS Education Scotland’s START course to become a Vocational Dental Practice Trainer and had a VDP Trainee.
As well as my 3 day week as Senior Salaried Dental Officer/ Clinical teaching Fellow at Aberdeen Dental School I have a role with NHS Education Scotland as CPD Adviser for North East Scotland based at Aberdeen Dental Education Centre.
I have been a member of the BDA for 33 years and Faculty of General Dental Practice RCS England for 25 years, achieving their MFGDP qualification in 2006 and their Diploma in Restorative Dentistry in 2018.
