Biography

On qualifying in 1996, I spent a year at Glasgow Dental Hospital & School then went on to complete my VT year in Aberdeen. I spent 5 years as a full-time associate in another practice in Aberdeen where I was fortunate enough to work with an excellent principal, both clinically and ethically, I learned how to run a practice by treating patients as you would like to be treated.

In October 2003, I opened a squat practice in Banchory, Aberdeenshire. The practice was awarded BDA Good Practice Scheme Membership in December 2004. In December 2014, practice was awarded Gold Membership after 10 years on the scheme. In April 2016, I sold the practice and continued to work there as an associate, whilst also being involved in clinical mentoring of the younger associates.

Clinically, I have always maintained in interest in endodontics and oral surgery. However, over the years, my main passion has been to practice dentistry ethically, professionally and with integrity.

After over 22 years in general practice, I am very familiar with the many requirements and skills of a modern dental professional; clinical, ethical, regulatory, communicatory, empathetic and leadership. I now split my time fulfilling a number of different roles; NHS Shetland Director of Dentistry, NHS Forth Valley Dental Practice Adviser and Inspector, GDC Fitness to Practice clinical expert/adviser, independent dental expert witness, clinical mentor, MFDS examiner, dental adviser for NICE.

In February 2020, I was accepted as an Associate Fellow of the Higher eaching Academy (AFHEA) and successfully completed the requirements to be accepted as a Fellow of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (FFGDP(UK)). Currently, I am studying for a master’s degree; LLM in Medical Law and Ethics and have completed the PG Diploma element of this study.

I very much enjoy the opportunity to pass on some of my experiences from my different roles in my position as clinical lecturer at Aberdeen Institute of Dentistry.
