Colvin Greig was a Lecturer in Music Education at the former Northern College of Education from 1963 until his retirement in 1993. He played an important role in the education of a large number of music teachers working in Scotland, in both primary and secondary sectors. One of his many passions was the nurturing of creativity in his students in all areas of their study through working with other disciplines, particularly Art & Design and Drama. The prize is awarded to a student who has exhibited creativity in one or more aspects of their studies, over and above that which is normally required from a music education student at the university; this could be in composition, performance, research or school experience.

There is no application process as award winners are chosen by academic staff in the department.
