Young medics of the future are being encouraged to ‘grab a coat’ and visit Europe’s largest teaching campus next month.

The University of Aberdeen’s Medical School has invited school pupils interested in studying medicine next year to its first Open Day, which is being held on Wednesday, September 8, from 10am to 5.30pm.

Invites have been sent to hundreds of secondary schools throughout the UK and already more than 60 fifth and sixth year pupils have signed up for the day visit.

During the Open Day, the youngsters will have the opportunity to visit different departments, including General Practice, Oncology, Pathology, Orthopaedic Surgery. Information and advice will also be given on overseas electives, careers in medicine and alternatives to medicine.

They will also learn about the benefits of studying modern concepts of health care against a background of international research and a long medical tradition. The University of Aberdeen boasts the oldest Chair in Medicine in the English speaking world, dating back to 1498.

Anyone wishing to reserve a place at the Open Day should contact the Medical School on (01224) 681818, Ext 54975, fax on (01224) 840708, or e-mail on mfo022@admin.abdn.ac.uk
