Curing the Resource Curse Moving the frontiers of Local Content, Sovereign Wealth Funds, Indigenous Peoples Rights and Impact & Benefits Sharing Agreement
The Aberdeen University Centre for Energy & Resources Law (AUCERL) leads dedicated and innovative multidisciplinary studies and research, professional advisory and training, into how petroleum and other minerals resources could be better utilised by governments, industry, host communities and others, to produce development, equity and other positive outcomes. This is in contrast to the puzzling “Resource Curse” – mineral resources producing negative outcomes of poverty, poor economic growth, corruption, conflicts, stunted development and even wars. The conference will present latest and innovative approaches on the subject. The conference will be led by University of Aberdeen Faculty, University of Aberdeen doctoral and masters students from many nations will present their research work and innovative solutions to this fascinating and topical but yet troublesome subject. The CPD Local Content Masterclass cohort will also join.

Dr Mark Igiehon: Mark is a international oil and gas industry leader, lawyer and commercial negotiator with over 30 years' experience of which some 17 years’ extensive legal and executive leadership experience was with Shell Group across many jurisdictions. Mark was in private legal practice before joining Shell. Mark has extensive international experience working with Shell out of Nigeria, the United Kingdom and North Sea region, Kazakhstan, and Shell Group HQ in Netherlands. of which some 17 years’ extensive legal and executive leadership experience was with Shell Group across many jurisdictions. Mark was in private legal practice before joining Shell. Mark has extensive international experience working with Shell out of Nigeria, the United Kingdom and North Sea region, Kazakhstan, and Shell Group HQ in Netherlands.Professor Tina Soliman Hunter: Tina is a Professor in Petroleum Law teaching and researching in the area of petroleum law (offshore), Arctic resources law, and shale gas law. As part of her research into these areas, she considers the need for and impact of local content provisions. She has received academic qualifications in marine sediments and geology, political science, applied science, and law, completing her PhD at the University of Bergen, Norway. She has undertaken teaching and research in numerous countries including the UK, Australia, Norway, Canada, Iceland, Greece, Finland, Russia, the USA and the Philippines. Her expertise in regulating petroleum activities and their impacts has been sought worldwide. Professor Soliman Hunter is currently the Leader of the multidisciplinary Consortium of Researchers and Experts in North and Arctic Marine Ecosystems Oil Contamination (CRENAME), and a visiting Professor at Tomsk State University in the Russian Federation She has published five books and over one hundred articles, book chapters and conference papers. She is currently completing a book on Russian Petroleum Law, the first of its kind in English.
