Abstract: Global energy consumption and demand are rising astronomically. All stakeholders in the energy system grapple with complex issues to meet this demand in a sustainable way. Energy production, distribution and consumption create problems that raise fundamental questions about what is right or good. A focus on people, the environment and energy as a service (not just a commodity) touches on ethics across the energy cycle. A focus on people means that ethical sensibilities and dimensions arise. Questions on justice, rights and equity touch on whether the energy system is sustainable. Why is this a problem?

Carbon emissions are growing exponentially. The energy industry is at the centre of these emissions; with two-thirds of global emissions traced to 90 companies. Therefore, cleaner sources of energy are needed on a global scale.  International energy investment implies that more money flows to fossil fuel projects. There are diverse ethical problems to this. Fossil fuels are depletable resources. Is it right and good to exploit finite resources wantonly? Do we have a duty to be considerate of future generations? Are inter and intra-generational equity a focus of the energy industry? The environmental harm, morbidity and mortality effects of pollutants and energy projects are alarming. Moreover, a global assessment of energy investments suggests that even with renewable energy projects, there are inequalities on energy access as well as on the distribution of benefits and the harms of energy. All these issues are faced in a context where many energy projects are long-term. This means that current investment determines the energy mix for decades to come. The presentation aims to give an introduction of various concepts that deal with the issue of ethics in energy investment.
