Latin American Studies

MSc Programme in Latin American Studies

Programme co-ordinator: Dr Mervyn Bain (

The MSc in Latin American Studies at the University of Aberdeen is a truly interdisciplinary postgraduate degree, as students will study Latin American culture, development and the politics and international relations of the region. Staff expertise from both Hispanic Studies in the School of Modern Languages and the Department of Politics and International Relations will do this. The degree consists of both core courses and a variety of electives, which will allow students to tailor their own degree to their specific interests. In addition, students will write a dissertation on a topic of their own choice. The University of Aberdeen MSc in Latin America Studies is not only unique to a Scottish University but is also one of only very few in the United Kingdom to have such an interdisciplinary nature.

The programme is open to students with a first and upper second class honours degree or recognised equivalent in Latin American Studies, Hispanic Studies, Politics, International Relations, Development, Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Law or cognate disciplines. For candidates who do not meet normal admission requirements, relevant professional experience may be taken into account, e.g. as in the case of past or present government officials or members of the media. While Spanish language is not be a prerequisite, students can take optional Spanish classes.

More widely, the strongly interdisciplinary ethos  of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, with research and teaching clusters such as the Centre for Modern Thought, the Comparative Literature and Thought programme and the Centre for Early Modern Studies offer superb opportunities for multidisciplinary research across fields such as social, critical and political theory, history and philosophy. Students are able to combine specialised research into modern Spanish and Latin American studies with consideration of their wider place within the contemporary geopolitical and academic world.
