Service Description

The ownCloud service’s primary role is to facilitate data sharing between Aberdeen University researchers and external collaborators. It provides a safe, secure, and trackable file synchronization and sharing solution on servers owned and managed by University of Aberdeen. Users can share one or more files and folders from their computer, and synchronize them with the ownCloud server, place files in their local ownCloud directories, or via the web interface, and those files are then synchronized to the server and to other devices using the ownCloud Desktop Sync Client, Android app, or iOS app. Users need to register with the Directorate of Digital and Information Services (DDIS) and be enabled for this service.


  • Connect to ownCloud securely from any location at 
  • Clients available for Windows, Mac OS X, and various Linux distributions
  • Controlled authenticated access
  • Available to external users via a personal, organizational or UoA external account
  • Ability to create new files and folders or upload from elsewhere
  • Drag and drop functionality
  • Ability to personalise your settings
  • Ability to synchronise files between the ownCloud server and your chosen directories

Note: Files deleted from the sync directory on your PC will also be deleted from the server and any other connected sync device.


  • All registered members of staff, including honorary members of staff
  • Students when authorised by their supervisor
  • External (e.g. consultants, visitors, etc.) when collaborating with University staff

Service Hours

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, excluding scheduled downtimes.
  • There will be scheduled downtimes - prior warning of at least a week shall be given, except in exceptional circumstances.

Level of Service

  • Support for the service is available through email during normal working hours.
