A few bits and piece for you to keep in mind when you are getting ready for University and once you arrive!

Before Arrival

What to Bring with You

  • Certificate of Acceptance
  • Confirmation of who will be paying for your tuition fees if you are not paying them yourself
  • Accommodation contract and/or details of where you will be staying
  • Relevant medical records and details of existing medical conditions


  • Check out our arrival page for information about making your own way to campus
  • Make sure you have cash and change on you. Taxis have additional charges for paying by card and First Bus do not give change
  • Internet – the entire University of Aberdeen campus has wireless internet

After Arrival


International Students' Additional Checklist

  • Check the International Students Pre-Departure Guide
  • Check Visa requirements and make necessary arrangements
  • Bring a valid passport or travel document with visa if applicable
  • Collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from the Post Office named in your visa letter
  • Make a copy of passport, including the page that was stamped by immigration on arrival to the UK, and biometric card and bring with you to registration
  • Register with the UK police (if applicable)

  • Sorting out a UK telephone: you can set up a pay as you go or pay monthly telephone at various stores in the city

  • Electricity here may be different to what you have at home. In the UK the voltage is 230
  • Most computers, mobile phones and cameras will have an automatic voltage converter – meaning it will automatically convert the voltage to whatever it is plugged into. HOWEVER – you MUST double check your appliances
  • Some small appliances – like hairdryers – won’t necessarily convert. You need to double check the appliance before you plug anything in
  • Make sure you have your plug adaptors (you can pick it up at the airport, or any electronics shop)
