CardioThe Metabolic and Cardiovascular Health research programme is focused on understanding the complex processes that are involved in the development of heart and blood vessel disease and the underlying risk factors.

Our studies involve a diverse range of approaches and experimental models from genes and proteins, to cells and animal models through to the clinical setting. We have areas of expertise in the investigation of:

  • Obesity, type-2 diabetes, hypertention, stroke, major risk factors for cardiovascular disease;
  • Cardiovascular medicine, cardiomyopathy, heart failure in clinical patients;
  • Macrophage activation in atherosclerotic plaque stability;
  • Platelets and mechanisms of coagulation;
  • Vascular biology, signalling and disease;
  • Cardiomyogenesis and signalling;
  • Novel drug discovery, pharmacology and clinical trials of available drugs.

Our research funders include the Medical Research Council, British Heart Foundation, Tenovus Scotland, NHS Grampian and others. Find out more about these Research areas and People who lead these projects, click on the links on the left.
