PhD Project Title: The New Iron Age: Investigating the Role of Brain Iron in Neurodegeneration and Cognitive Decline.

This project uses Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) to map brain iron deposition based on magnetic susceptibility from MRI scans. The STRADL cohort used consists of participants in Generation Scotland research including from the ACONF (Aberdeen Children of the 1950's) cohort (a population-based, life-course resource which follows people born in Aberdeen between 1950 and 1956).

Biological markers for inflammation and iron metabolism, as well as, Social data from the cohort will be compared to the brain iron deposition data generated from QSM to investigate the links between neurodegenerative mechanisms and brain iron deposition.
