Years 1 to 3
GP teaching is delivered in years 1 to 3, this is known as the Foundations of Primary Care course. All students are allocated to a group and attached to an Aberdeen City Practice for small group teaching sessions. In addition there are interactive lectures, GP Live sessions for all years and an Inequality Seminar held in year 3 which enables students to interact with various 3rd sector organisations. Some of the tutorials provided in practice over the 3 years are:
- Nature of General Practice
- What is Health
- Management of Risk and Uncertainty
- Team Around the Patient
- End of Life Care
Interactive sessions are held throughout the Foundations of Primary Care course and include:
- GP Live
- School Visits
- Inequality Seminar
The aim of the Foundations of Primary Care Course in Years 1, 2 and 3 is to prepare students for further learning about General Practice and how it relates to Secondary Care.
Year 4
Students in year 4 undertake a 5 week block, moving to year 5 which has an 8 week block. The majority of the block is spent in an accredited teaching practice with a designated GP Tutor providing clinical teaching, this is complemented by core teaching at the Foresterhill campus.
The following topics are delivered in small groups for year 4 as part of the core teaching with additional input from Public and Occupational Health
- General Practice – Who, What, Why, Where? (Part 1 and 2)
- The Consultation
- Reasoning and Prescribing
- Case Studies
- Handling Complex Situations
- Discussion Topics
Year 5
Year 5 spend the first week undertaking core teaching in collaboration with Psychiatry this is all based in Aberdeen, using clinical vignettes with trained actors playing the patients on the following topics:
- Addictions
- Dementia
- Generalism
- GMEDS
- LIFE Crisis
- Medically Unexplained Physical Symptoms (MUPS)
The aims of the Year 4 and Year 5 GP placements are:
- To learn general medical principles in a primary care setting.
- To build on knowledge in Occupational Medicine and Public Health and population based medicine within the context of community and primary care.
- To demonstrate knowledge of common illnesses presenting in primary care; appropriate communication skills and a reflective approach to learning.
As the UK’s most rural facing medical programme, General Practice actively promotes remote and rural opportunities and where possible have run extra-curricular activities, fostering links with community hospitals, mountain rescue and BASICS.
