Research Interests

Prof Jörg Feldmann’s research interests concern understanding environmental and metabolic processes at the molecular level, particularly when the molecules involved contain a heteroelement  (e.g. F, P, S, As, Se, Sb, Hg, Bi, Pb, Sn). The focus of his work is on arsenic speciation in soil/plant as well as in the marine environment. While some studies are very applied such as the arsenic in rice studies. They led to the introduction of the maximum permissible level of inorganic arsenic in rice from the WHO and at the EU level. please see link here:

While his studies on arsenic in rice are very applied, his work also encompasses highly fundamental studies, such as the elucidation of arsenolipids in marine mammals.

Current Research

More than 20 years ago, JF started to work with the then very new technique of ICP-MS during his PhD thesis, and immediately used it for coupling GC to ICPMS for the determination of volatile organometallic compounds. Since then, ICP-MS has been the decisive tool that his academic career was built on, with the advent of using it as a detector for speciation and bioimaging of trace elements. To date, he has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers (citations > 13,000, h-index >60), mainly featuring ICP-MS results in over 90% of these papers. His key achievements are the development of analytical methods with applications in the medical sciences, epidemiology, microbiology, environmental science, food safety and in particular plant physiology. Hence, about half of his papers were published in analytical journals, while the others were published in general chemistry, environmental science and life science journals including Angew. Ch., Chem. Comm., Lancet, Sci Rep, ES&T, PNAS, PLoS and Science.

The TESLA lab's instrumentation includes two ICP-MS/MS (Agilent 8800), ESI-Orbitrap (Thermo Discovery), ESI-qTOF-MS (Bruker maxis II), ESI-IT-MS (Agilent XCT), several HPLC-ICP-MS (Agilent 1200, 7500), laser ablation (New Wave 213), GC-ICP-MS and CV-AFS (PS Analytics, Merlin), HG-AFS (PSA), HR-CS-AAS (Analytic Jena ContrAA 700), AF4-UV-MALS (Postnova)-ICPMS/MS, gel electrophoresis, microwave digestion facilities (MARS, Ethos) clean room facilities, and a cryo-microtome.

Current projects:

- Arsenic speciation in food (inorganic arsenic in rice, seafood, etc.) using HPLC-ICPMS and affordable methods such as HPLC-HG-AFS, field kits

- Arsenic and selenium uptake and translocation in plants using elemental and molecular mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS/ESI-MS)

- Absolute quantification of proteins using species-specific isotope dilution mass spectrometry (gel electrophoresis laser ablation ICP-MS)

- Dynamic bioimaging of zinc in thin sections of organisms exposed to selected stable isotopes using laser ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS and LA-MC-ICP-MS)

- Arsenic species identification and quantification without standards using HPLC-ICP-MS/ESMS (Arsenomics or arsenic speciation)

- Inorganic arsenic in seaweed (analytical chemistry and environmental studies)

- Arsenolipids in marine samples (stranded pilot whales, seaweed): the analysis, the occurrence and the origin of arsenic containing lipids

- Method developments for archaeological specimen such as teeth and horns using LA-ICP-MS

- Biovolatilisation of arsenic, tin, selenium, antimony, iodine and mercury using GC-ICP-MS

- Method development for trace element speciation in oil & gas with an emphasis on mercury and arsenic (Petroleomics)

- Determination of natural and biological nano-particles (NNP and BNP) in the environment and in biological systems

- Fluorine speciation analysis in environmental and biological samples (Fluoronomics) using CS-MAS and ICP-MS.

- Biogeochemistry of selenium and tellurium using bioimaging and speciation analysis
