Research Interests

Research within the Piertney-Lab centres on the use of molecular markers to provide novel insight into the ecology, evolution and conservation of natural populations.

Studies have been undertaken across a broad taxonomic range of both vertebrates and invertebrates, and have spanned the complete evolutionary hierarchy - from resolving phylogenetic relationships among taxa, determining patterns of phylogeographic and population genetic structure within species, identifying the genetic relatedness among individuals within populations, to characterising the dynamics of genomes and individual gene regions of adaptive and ecological relevance.

A central research theme is in understanding how different ecological, behavioural and microevolutionary processes affect levels of neutral and adaptive genetic diversity in natural populations, and how this  spatio-temporal variation in genetic diversity influences individual fitness, population dynamics and long-term population viability.

Originally, focus was on neutral polymorphisms (e.g. microsatellites) and candidate genes of known ecological importance (e.g. MHC, TLR, MC1R), but latterly emphasis has switched to using next generation 'omics technologies and high throughput DNA sequencing to gain a more holistic understanding of adaptation and genomic response to environmental and ecological change.

A lot of current effort is focussed on marine invertebrate species, with a focus on understanding speciation genomics in intertidal isopods, adaptation in deep-ocean amphipods, and characterising deep-sea communities using metagenomics.
