Welcome to the Institute of Biological & Environmental Sciences (IBES), the research wing of the School of Biological Sciences.

IBES comprises a total of 55 full time academic staff and their respective research groups. This includes about 80 post doctoral research staff and 150 PhD students. Current active research grants total approximately £25M (c. 29M €, 39M US$).

The IBES research campus comprises several buildings in Old Aberdeen, plus outstations strategically located across Scotland. Most IBES staff are based in the Cruickshank, Zoology and St Machar Drive Buildings immediately adjacent to the Cruickshank Botanical Garden. In addition, we have staff housed in Oceanlab in Newburgh, which is a unique purpose built research facility established to enable marine science from coastal to deep sea environments around the world; and the Lighthouse Field Station in Cromarty, that is the focus of our marine top-predator research. IBES also benefits from field stations in Bettyhill and Eynhallow on Orkney.

Research activity and potential has recently been reinforced through the establishment of the University’s Centre for Genome Enabled Biology & Medicine, which provides infrastructure and bioinformatic capacity for multi-‘omics analysis; a dedicated research computing facility, with a 400 node cluster to analyse and archive burgeoning empirical datasets and modelling applications; and focussed strategic investment in multidisciplinary research across the portfolio of IBES activity.

The University of Aberdeen has recently identified a broad research strategy going forward based upon key multidisciplinary research areas that address major global challenges and areas of fundamental societal concern. Four areas have been identified that cut across the traditional University structure of Colleges, Schools and Institutes

These areas for investment dovetail well with the long term research strategy for IBES and as such, our research strategy is clearly sustainable and will benefit from the broad University investment in staff and infrastructure.
