Biography

Josefine Björkqvist is an exercise physiologist, with a background in clinical exercise physiology and cancer rehabilitation. She spent four years leading a joint project between Macmillan Cancer Support, Sport Aberdeen and NHS Grampian and developing cancer rehabilitation services to support self-management through physical activity in Grampian. In 2017 Josefine won the Macmillan Excellence Award for Integration Excellence for her work on integrating physical activity into routine cancer care. In June 2019 she was Runner Up in the Principal’s Prize for Public Engagement with Research in the Early Career Researcher category.

Josefine is a Research Fellow and Doctoral Candidate in the Academic Urology Unit at the University of Aberdeen. She is leading the EVOLVE project, an international collaboration to develop meaningful patient and public involvement in the design of care for urological cancers in Europe. She is also working on the PARTNER study, which aims to develop a new Prostate Cancer Decision Aid tool in collaboration with people living with prostate cancer and healthcare professionals. 

Since 2022 Josefine has been a visiting researcher with the Public Health Research Program at Folkhalsan Research Centre in Helsinki, Finland. She is funded by the Saltire Emerging Researcher Scheme, which is aimed at promoting mobility and collaboration between Scottish and European research partners.

Josefine has held previous roles on the Aberdeen 2040 Sustainable Workstream Steering Group, helping to develop the University's 2040 Strategic Plan for Sustainability, and she has been involved in the Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team for the Institute of Education in Healthcare and Medical Sciences.
