Biography
John Ross is Emeritus Senior Lecturer in Hyperbaric Medicine at the University of Aberdeen having retired from the University in 2010 and from his post of Honorary Consultant in Hyperbaric Medicine to NHS Grampian. He graduated in 1973 from the University of Aberdeen Medical School and then completed vocational training in anaesthesia while gaining his PhD in the pharmacological manipulation of the high pressure nervous syndrome from the University of London when working for the Medical Research Council. He took up his University of Aberdeen post in 1985 with clinical responsibilities of Head of Service for Hyperbaric Medicine (1990-2001) and Medical Director of the NHS in Scotland Registration Service for the Treatment of Decompression Illness (2000). His research interests have included the toxicity of inhalation anaesthetics, closed circuit anaesthesia, inhalational sedation for minor surgical procedures, pulmonary oxygen toxicity and carbon monoxide poisoning. His major current research interest is into the health effects of a career as a professional diver, particularly in the offshore oil and gas industry. Current research projects include longitudinal health surveillance of oilfield divers, exposure to fumes during welding operations, and the long term health consequences of carbon monoxide poisoning.
