The Young Statisticians’ Section of The Royal Statistical Society (RSS) Highland Local Group are pleased to announce that registration and submission of abstracts are now open for the second biennial ‘Young Researchers using Statistics’ (YRS) symposium.

The YRS symposium will be held in the Sir Duncan Rice Library, Old Aberdeen on Wednesday 23rd May from 9am to 5pm

The symposium will consist of short presentations and include opportunities for networking (see flyer of the event attached). There will be a prize of £50 in Amazon Vouchers for the best talk!

This event aims to encourage young or early career researchers from the local research community who use interesting statistical methods to meet and chat about their research and present their work to a friendly audience for constructive feedback. The long-term aim is to create a supportive community of practice. Researchers and students using more advanced statistical methods are welcome, although given the mixed disciplines, talks should not be overly technical with the emphasis on applied methods if possible.

We have two amazing plenary speakers confirmed – Dr Jen Rogers, Director of Statistical Consultancy Services, University of Oxford, who will be talking about risk communication, and Dr Liberty Vittert, Mitchell Lecturer, School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Glasgow, who will present her work on facial shape analysis.

Please find a template for the submission of abstracts here. This should be completed in full and emailed to Abstracts will be reviewed by our selection committee and the decision will be notified by the end of March/early April.

Whether you submit an abstract or not we really hope that you will attend this year’s YRS Symposium. There will be a fee of £5 to attend which is to cover lunch, tea and coffee.  Please register at the online store here:

We would appreciate it if you could publicise this event in your organisation e.g. you could pass this page on to colleagues and pin the attached poster to your departmental noticeboard. If you have any queries please contact the YRS committee by emailing
