Research governance can be defined as the regulations, principles and standards of good practice that are in place to achieve, and continuously improve, excellence in the quality of research.
Research governance applies to everyone connected with research including Chief Investigators, Principal Investigators, Care Professionals, Researchers, their employers and support staff.
Research governance aims to ensure:
- Research participants are protected
- Researchers and investigators conducting research are protected
- Research is performed to the highest ethical and scientific standards
- Research practice and performance are monitored appropriately
