Welcome to the group: Jay Woods

Jay joins the group from the Centre for Healthcare and Randomised Trials (CHaRT) team, and will be working as a Project Assistant for the UK Antimicrobial Registry (UKAR) study.

Tell us a bit about yourself

Before joining The Epidemiology Group, I completed 2 years of Computer Science at Robert Gordon University (RGU) where received my Diploma of Higher Education in Computing. Shortly after leaving RGU, I was hired on a temporary contract by The University of Aberdeen’s Centre for Healthcare and Randomised Trials (CHaRT) as an Admin Assistant where I worked on a variety of studies doing data entry, archiving, auditing and more. Working in CHaRT was such a positive experience for me but sadly my contract was soon coming to a close, and so when a similar position opened up in the Epidemiology Group I jumped at the opportunity.

What will you be investigating while you are in Aberdeen?

I am working as a Project Assistant on the UK Antimicrobial Registry (UKAR) study. Effective antimicrobial agents are a crucial component of modern medicine allowing the elimination or inhibition of growth of all microorganisms.  However, their effectiveness is threatened by evolutionary development of certain microbes. The study will be looking to determine, using real world data, the effectiveness and safety of recently licensed antimicrobial agents.

Why did you choose Aberdeen?

Growing up near Aberdeen I have known many friends that work in different departments of the University who all have spoken very highly of how positive it is to be a part of the University. After joining CHaRT, I got to experience for myself what a positive work environment it is and how many resources the University offers to help its employees become the best version of themselves.

I am very new to the field of Epidemiology, and I think that UoA has the facilities in place to help me gain a deep knowledge of what it means to become a good researcher.

Are you involved in any other research?

Not yet but I am hoping that in the future I can become more involved.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I am a big computer nerd. I spend a lot of my time building and tinkering with computers for myself and friends and enjoy gaming. I often meet up with friends on the weekends for game nights playing tabletop board or card games. I also am really into my fitness and do weightlifting in the gym several times a week.
