Smoke-free legislation in England & Scotland. Secondary analysis of data relating to the hospitality sector
Ludbrook, A. Skåtun, D. and Ma, A. (HERU)
Smokefree legislation came into force in Scotland in March 2006 and in England in July 2007. Wales also implemented smokefree legislation in March 2007. The different implementation dates in the constituent countries provide an opportunity to use the timing of any effects on the hospitality sector as part of the analysis.
Employment, turnover and profitability have been used in analyses conducted in other countries. However, an initial scoping of the data suggested that employment was likely to be the most feasible analysis, as data were routinely collected on a quarterly basis. This forms the main basis of the feasibility study but consideration was also given to the potential for analysing other indicators and to using commercial data.
