Summary

A systematic review of trials and other studies was used to derive estimates of effectiveness. These estimates were then used as inputs to an economic model, which was used to derive estimates of cost-effectiveness of the different surgical interventions.

In the absence of strong evidence in favour of newer methods, TURP remains both clinically effective and cost-effective. The use of minimally invasive technologies in the NHS is not appropriate until a more effective and/or less costly technology is available.
