Bells palsy

Bell’s palsy: Early acycLovir and/or prednisoLone in Scotland “BELLS”: a multicentre factorial trial of the early administration of steroids and/or antivirals for Bell’s Palsy

(Centre of Academic Primary Care, University of Aberdeen), McKinstry, B. (Lothian and Borders Primary Care Research Network), Davenport, R. (Western General Hospital, Edinburgh), Clarkson, J. (Dental Health Services Research Unit, University of Dundee) and Cairns, J. (HERU)

Summary

A randomised 2×2 factorial design was used to assess whether prednisolone and/or acyclovir commenced within the first 72 hours of onset of Bell’s palsy was effective and cost-effective. The economic evaluation calculated the incremental cost per additional neurological deficit resolved and the incremental cost per QALY. QALYs were derived using the Health Utilities Index to measure quality of life at baseline, three months and nine months.
