Dr Mair graduated from the University in 1957 with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career with Rolls Royce in Glasgow in 1957 and became a Product Centre Manager. From 1960 he served a three year Short Service Commission in the Royal Air Force. He was appointed MD of Caithness Glass in 1971 and retired as Chairman and MD in 1998. He has been Chairman of CBI Scotland and President of the British Glass Manufacturers Confederation.
Dr Mair has been a non-executive director of Grampian Television and of Crieff Hydro where he was latterly Chairman. He joined the University Court in 1993 and was Chancellor’s Assessor from 2000 to 2010. He continues as Chairman of the Trustees of UASLAS, the University’s non-academic pension fund, and represents the University on the board of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). He has been involved in the University Library Project from the beginning and continues to fundraise in the UK and US. He was awarded an MBE in 1987 and a LLD from the University in 2004.
