The Techniques in Physical Geography fieldtrip to students to visit various glacial sites around Aberdeen, investigating the glacial history and the challenges glacial sediments can pose for engineers in the energy transition
The first of the fieldtrips for the third year course Techniques in Physical Geography was out yesterday. The students visited various glacial sites north of Aberdeen where they first looked at an esker and its associated delta, deposited by last advance of the ice at the end of the last glaciation. They then visited a proposed landfall site for an electric cable related to the energy transition and investigated the geotechnical engineering problems posed by complex deposits of glacial sediments. In Sandford Bay the students investigated the stratigraphy, determined ice flow directions and reconstructed the deglacial history of the region. It was a typical NE Scotland winter day, wind, rain and some sunshine!
