I was appointed Lecturer in Human Geography here in 2009, having previously been a Research Fellow. Before that, I worked as a researcher at the universities of Bristol and Coventry, and at the Scottish Agricultural College (now Scotland's Rural College).
My main current research interests are in agri-food and historical geographies, focusing on alternative economic (e.g. food) networks, agricultural change and hunting.
I supervise the following research students:
Stoyka Chipchakova. With funding from the University's Environment and Food Security research theme, Stoyka is undertaking a PhD on 'Addressing food security by controlling the risk of food poisoning: an exemplar case study of listeriosis in the Scottish smoked salmon industry'.
Sarah de Rees. Based at UHI's Centre for Nordic Studies in Kirkwall, Sarah is working towards an MPhil. on "The Nordic Diet and its applications in the modern era".
Annabelle McLaren-Thomson. Based in Geography and Sustainable Development at the University of St. Andrews, Annabelle is studying how micro and small sized rural serviced accommodation businesses engage with their communities of place, and the impact that these businesses have on the social sustainability of those communities of place.
Ramona Statache. Ramona is based in dot.rural and is studying the relationship between rural communities and Small & Medium Enterprises, assessing the extent to which the latter's social media use is based on shared social and cultural capital and is conducive to mutual development.
