NARSS: Khipus, Gender, Place and Knowledge

Although the knotted cords texts known as "khipus" have been used in the Andes for over a millennium (c 950 AD - 1950AD), their history and symbolism remain little understood.  This presentation analyses a hitherto unknown ritual manuscript, the Entablo, from the village of Casta, Peru, where a type of khipu known as a "khipu board" was used until the 1950s. This study reveals new insights into the social and symbolic nature of khipus, particularly with reference to gender, place, and knowledge.
