MSc. Sustainability Transitions
Why did you choose this degree programme at the University of Aberdeen?
Working in the development sector in India made me hyperaware of political and socio-economic injustice. With a strong desire to contribute to shaping a better world, sustainability, as a concept and practice, deeply resonates with my personal interest.
Through my work in the development sector, I attempted to pursue sustainability in myriad ways. But I reached a point where I realized I needed some formal input to elevate my skills and subject knowledge. While scouting around for relevant Masters level courses I came across the MSc Sustainability Transitions offered by University of Aberdeen.
The MSc Sustainability Transitions is one of a kind course in the entire UK and helps one gain an overall understanding of current environmental challenges and conflict mitigation practices, an overview of policies, management tools, and techniques like GIS , how to form multi-scalar partnerships and develop relevant skills and knowledge required to make the future more sustainable.
What part of your degree programme have you enjoyed the most or find most interesting so far?
I have immensely enjoyed learning all the modules in the course. The programme helps us reflect on the growing need to protect the environment and use resources of land, water, soil, plants, and animals in a balanced and sustainable way. I particularly enjoyed learning about policy and the economic side of environment management.
The leadership course gave us an opportunity to undergo the simulated Mt. Everest ascent as a group and was a remarkable learning experience that also taught us the importance of working in teams and supporting each other.
What knowledge, skills or experience have you gained or developed on your programme?
The program has given me a good grounding in both environmental management theory and applied components. It has taught me how to evaluate current environmental issues; form a holistic and transdisciplinary understanding of approaches to environmental problems; understand environmental economics and policy; participate in environmental management; develop research skills and undertaking literature reviews; and project evaluation.
Have you taken part in any work placement, internship, or other type of research or professional experience during your studies?
During the winter break I secured the Environmental Placement Program internship (offered by Bright Green Business (Edinburgh)) with KR Group, Scotland even before even completing the course. At KR Group I had a chance to:
- Work closely with the KR Group team on the KR Bon Reduction Project (Circular Economy project funded by Zero Waste Scotland and DEFRA) and its marketing campaigns
- Worked on other environmental marketing campaigns for the group
- Helped KR Group effectively build the emission reduction impact story using the Carbon Impact Forecast Tool
- Successfully registered KR Bon reduction project on the UN SDG platform
- Researched on renewable energy and hybrid vehicles for the group
This placement helped me practically use my learnings about sustainable transitions while gaining a first-hand understanding of how such solutions are applied and has tremendously increased the value of my learnings overall!
I have also secured another 3 month internship with ITW Offsite a leading name in construction tools and equipment to coordinate their marketing and sustainability for UKI and Nordics.
What are your plans for the future (after you graduate)?
After graduation, I hope to be able to deeply embed myself in the sustainability sector helping organisations realise their potential and help them become sustainable businesses of the future!
What advice would you give another student who is considering applying to this programme?
Yes, I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone who has dreams of learning and gaining knowledge about sustainable transitions which can be applied across sectors. It is a great course that provides you with very relevant and transferable skills and knowledge which can be used today in any industry. It is a program that trains the future generation of innovators, thinkers, and doers who have the passion and ambition to become true sustainability leaders which the world needs NOW!
