SUMMARY:Research Seminar with Dr Jeremovic: Rhetorical Community and Equality in the Vienna Sales Convention
DESCRIPTION:The book project Rhetorical Community and Equality in the Vienna Sales Convention addresses a gap in scholarship on the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), where interpretation is often detached from its historical context while retaining assumptions of neutrality. Drawing on law, philosophy, and literary studies, the project understands interpretation as rhetorical, relational, and context-dependent, and explores critical approaches to international sales and trade law. The seminar, co-organised by the Aberdeen Centre for Constitutional and Public International Law and the Centre for Commercial Law, will present a strand of a research project that addresses a gap in scholarship on the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). Much existing scholarship approaches interpretation as detached from its historical context while retaining assumptions of neutrality. Drawing on insights from law, philosophy, and literary studies, the project challenges these assumptions by examining interpretation as rhetorical, relational, and context-dependent. The seminar will explore how this approach can open a path toward more critical modes of studying international sales law and, more broadly, international trade law.
