Stonehaven

Stonehaven is picturesque seaside town with a harbour that is tucked into the coastline. One of the unique events that has made Stonehaven famous takes place during the Hogmanay celebrations – the Fireball Festival. The annual fireballs ceremony, in which volunteers walk down the High Street swing huge balls of fire around and around at the ends of chains which are finally thrown into the harbour. The town also has an open air pool which is the UK's only art deco Olympic sized sea water lido.

Dunnottar Castle

Along the coast from Stonehaven lies a famous landmark, Dunnottar Castle. This romantic but ruined medieval fortress sits high on a rocky headland overlooking the North Sea.  A narrow strip of land joins the headland to the mainland, along which a steep path leads up to the gatehouse.

Those wishing to visit the castle are advised to wear suitable footwear. In the event of bad weather, the castle may be closed for safety reasons but hopefully in August this shall not be a problem.
