University of Aberdeen
AU power systems group has around 13 researchers, with the current external income is around £1.5 million, mostly from EU and UK research councils. The group has a well equipped power electronics laboratory with a 900V DC network demonstrator consisting of 7 converters of 30-40kW each and DC circuit Breakers. The group has long history of HVDC related research and participates strongly in related CIGRE and IEEE activities. We have collaborative links with UK manufacturing industry (ALSTOM, GE Energy) and grid operators Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) and Réseau de Transport d'Électricité (RTE) and numerous academic institutions. We are teaching a specially developed HVDC course to SSE. The Aberdeen group is a member of RenewNet consortium of Scottish Power Universities.
University of Strathclyde
The Power Electronics, Drives and Energy Conversion (PEDEC) group has a strong track record in large multi-partner, interdisciplinary projects, being a key contributor to the EPSRC Supergen FLEXNET and HiDEF projects, and to the Transition Pathways project for low-carbon energy systems in the UK. In addition, the PEDEC group was involved in the power electronics component of the Energy Technologies Institute network capacity study and supported the Alstom T&D HVDC converter program. Internationally, the PEDEC group is involved in the EU (FP7) Twenties program and the Transmission Technologies task for the EERA-Smartgrids collaboration. The group is involved in the current EPSRC Platform Grant on non-thermal (i.e. renewable energy) generation and integration into power systems.
China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI)
CEPRI is a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive research institution in China’s electric power sector which is a subsidiary of the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC). CEPRI have contracted many important research projects including National “973” Fundamental Research, National “863” and National Key Technologies R&D Program. The Power Electronic Department (PED) of CEPRI is the one of the most active research institutes in CEPRI, which undertakes research relevant to Flexible Power Transmission, Power Quality, and DC Transmission. PED has 93 researchers, and participates in the CIGRE WG B4-52 on high voltage DC grid. Power System Power Electronics Laboratory (PSPEL) of PED has substantial equipment and is capable of performing type tests of both FACTSs and HVDC&UHVDC valves according to IEC standards and includes RTDS.
HuaZhong University of Science and Technology (HUST)
HUST is a national key university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education of P. R. China. The College of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (CEEE), HUST is one of the best teaching and researching institutions of its kind in China. CEEE has 52 professors (43 PhD supervisors), and 61 associate professors. Tens of national, Provincial and ministerial grant projects are under researching, and more than 500 academic papers are published each year. The CEEE has made tremendous contribution in the field of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU)
SJTU Wind Power Research Center (WPRC) is composed of 9 staff members, 3 post doctors, 3 engineers and around 30 PhD and master students. The centre has participated in numerous research projects including: the first demonstrated offshore wind power station in China, the converter and main controller for 3.6 MW offshore wind turbine, large offshore wind farm for off-grid application, low cost medium-voltage H-bridge converter, three-level medium-voltage wind power converter, test of FUJI power module, large-capacity energy storage system and research on medium-frequency transformer for large-capacity isolated DC-DC converter.
State Grid Electric Power Research Institute (SGEPRI) and NR Electric Co., Ltd. (NR)
SGEPRI is directly affiliated to SGCC and conducts research and development in all fields of the power systems. SGEPRI is a China leading and comprehensive power research institute with over 10,000 scientists and engineers working in 9 research institutes and 16 companies covering very broad area of electrical power engineering.
NR Electric Co., Ltd of SGEPRI is one of the world-leading researchers and manufacturers in the area of HVAC and HVDC power systems. NR has more 1600 employees, including over 500 with PhD/MSc degrees. NR has completed over ten projects related to HVDC. It has comprehensive testing equipment: RTDS, RT_LAB, testing platforms of ±1KV, 15kW LCC and VSC HVDC, 10kV 6MVA VSC HVDC, 10kV, 10MVAr STATCOM, AC 1000kV and ±800KV HVDC.
