Research Profile
Prof. Angel Cuesta graduated in Chemistry from the University of Zaragoza (Spain) in 1992 and obtained his PhD in 1996 from the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain) for a thesis developed at the Institute of Physical Chemistry “Rocasolano” (CSIC, Madrid) under the supervision of Prof. C. Gutiérrez. After a postdoctoral period with Prof. D. M. Kolb (University of Ulm, Germany) he was appointed Staff Scientist at the Institute of Physical Chemistry “Rocasolano” in 2001. He was promoted to the Senior Scientist scale of CSIC in March 2010, and was appointed as Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen in July 2013, where he was promoted to Reader in August 2016a and where he is a Full Professor Since 2018. His research interests include fundamental aspects of interfacial electron transfer, structure of the electrical double layer and electrocatalysis. His research focuses on combining classical electrochemical techniques, in-situ vibrational and optical spectroscopy, and in-situ scanning tunnelling microscopy to obtain as detailed a description as possible of the electrode-electrolyte interface and of electrocatalytic reactions, down to the molecular level.
Prof. Cuesta has made relevant contributions regarding the role of atomic-ensemble effects in Electrocatalysis, for which he was awarded by the Electrochemistry Group of the Royal Spanish Chemical Society (RSEQ) the CIDETEC Prize of Scientific Research 2006. He has also provided a detailed mechanistic interpretation of the electrocatalytic oxidation of formic acid on metals based on time-resolved in-situ infrared studies. More recently, he has made important contributions within the area of electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. He is currently working on several energy storage and conversion projects spanning electrochemical energy conversion using alcohols derived from biomass as fuel, artificial photosynthesis for hydrogen production via solar water splitting, electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 and solar re-chargeable batteries, among others.
Prof. Cuesta served as Chair-elect of Division 7 of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) between January 2017 and December 2018, and is the acting Chair since January 2019 (Office ending December 2020). He served as member of the Editorial Board of Electrocatalysis (Springer) between 2010 and 2014. Since January 2016 belongs to the Editorial Board of the Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry (Elsevier) and since July he is also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Electrochemical Science Advances (Wiley).
