Research Profile
Astley Hastings is chartered mechanical engineer with an MSc and PhD in Environmental Science. He has 30 years of industrial experience, starting in the electricity generation industry and then in the upstream oil and gas industry in the upstream oil, specializing in reservoir engineering and well construction.
An Academic in the university of Aberdeen for the last 15 years he has been engaged in developing and using spatial for biomass growth and climate-biogeochemical interactions to quantify the impact of climate change and different land management systems on a variety of land covers. Current research involves quantifying the impact of energy production and use on natural capital and ecosystem services from both legacy fossil and renewable energy systems and investigating mitigation strategies for low carbon pathways, quantifying greenhouse gasses emissions and water use associated with the land use and land use change related to bioenergy feedstock, including afforestation, production and energy conversion pathways. This includes the domestication of new bioenergy crops for European climates as part of a negative emissions pathway with BECCS. Current h –index is 31 with ~3,977 citations.
