The Scottish Initial Teacher Education Student Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Attitudes Project is a large scale, ethically approved, educational research study which is designed for Student Teachers at Scotland’s eight teacher education institutions who are completing their studies in summer 2014 (E.g., Fourth Year MA/BEd or PGDE)

This project is principally designed to explore the following research questions:

  1. What are the attitudes of Scottish ITE students to the appropriateness of discussion with learners of: bullying (in general); bullying due to sexual orientation; same-sex relationships; same-sex families (in which there are children and young people); and same-sexual relationships (within the context of Relationships, Sexual Health, and Parenthood Education)?
  2. To what extent (if at all) have Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual issues featured in Scottish Initial Teacher Education students’ Courses/Programmes?
  3. To what extent (if at all) do students consider that Scottish Initial Teacher Education Courses/Programmes have adequately prepared them to confidently address Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual issues within a school context?
  4. To what extent (if at all) do students consider that it is a teacher’s role to address Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual issues in school?

Methodology

The Scottish Initial Teacher Education Student Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Attitudes Project is a mixed-methods research project which employs an online questionnaire and subsequent semi-structured focus group interviews.

A University of Aberdeen hosted online questionnaire was chosen due to the anonymity it provides.  Given the large scale nature of this project, open dialogue boxes have been minimised.  Instead, subsequent semi-structured focus group interviews will explore the data in more detail.

Ethics

This project has been ethically scrutinised and approved by the University of Aberdeen’s College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) and is in accordance with the BERA guidelines on educational research.  For more information on some of the ethical considerations which this Project has been subject to, click here ITE Ethics.
