The paper concludes that Scottish teacher education has many facets that may be acclaimed and that in looking ahead it is crucial to maintain the significant involvement of universities in all provision, in order to ensure that teachers in Scotland are equipped to face the challenges of the twenty first century and to play their part in the continuing development of civic culture and challenging educational disadvantage.
