Biography: Son of James Lipp, draper ; born Fochabers, 10 December 1891; educated at Milne's Institution, Fochabers ; matriculated in Arts, October 1908, graduated M.A. in 1911. After graduating he went as a rubber planter to Galong Bezar, Sumatra, where he did very successful work. In the spring of 1914 he returned to this country in order to take a degree in Forestry and with that aim in view commenced to study Science at his Alma Mater. Soon after the outbreak of war he enlisted at Bedford (August 1914) as a Private in the 6th Seaforths, but shortly afterwards entered Sandhurst and was commissioned to the Cameronians. After training at Nigg from May to October 1915, he was attached for active service to the 8th Royal Welsh Fusiliers and served at Gallipoli till the evacuation. Lipp was sent to Mesopotamia in January 1916 and was in command of his Company when he was wounded at Beit Aiessa, on 17 April of the same year. He died at Karachi (Station Hospital), 30 May 1916, a few days before his brother was killed in France. On the testimony of his brother officers his military career and example were beyond praise, and we who knew him best in times of peace will not forget his manliness and his never failing optimism.
