Biography: Son of William W. Burns; born Kiltarlity, 9 December 1891. M.A., 1914. Private, U Company, 4th Gordon Highlanders (T.F.), October 1911. Mobilized, August 1914. Commissioned, Royal Engineers, 7 March 1916. Served—Home, 1914-15, 1915-16; Belgium, France, Italy, February-November 1915, October 1916-April 1919. Final rank, Acting Captain. Mentioned in despatches, November 1918.
