Findlater, Alexander

Rank: Lance-Corporal

Regiment: 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders

Biography: Son of Alexander Findlater, mason. Born Edinburgh, 1 April 1896; educated at Fordyce Academy, where he gained five medals in his final year; entered the University in 1913, and carried off the 1st prize in Latin, and 5th in Greek during his first session. Then the war came, the fighting blood in young Findlater was stirred, and he promptly enlisted in "U" Company, 4th Gordon Highlanders. After 7 months' training at Bedford he went with his Battalion to Flanders, and is understood to have met his death in one of those "breathless episodes " near Hooge, 25 September 1915, thus carrying on the family tradition, for he was a nephew of Piper Findlater, V.C., of Dargai fame.

Date of Death: 25 September 1915

Burial Details: Name recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Panel 38, Column 5.

Publication: Roll of Service, edited by Mabel Desborough Allardyce. Published 1921.
