Black, Ian Campbell Bennett

Biography: Son of Professor John Bennett Black, Aberdeen University and Margaret Ross Black, of Aberdeen.; born Aberdeen, 15 May 1922 ; educated at Aberdeen Grammar School where he distinguished himself as an athlete. He began his medical course at the University, but in his second year volunteered for the Royal Air Force. After gaining his "Wings", he became captain of a bomber and took part in twenty-one major operations including the attacks on Hamburg, Peenemunde, Gelsenkirchen, Mannheim, Nurnberg and Berlin. He also crossed the Alps three times in operations over Modane, Milan and Turin. He lost his life when his bomber crashed during a raid on Berlin in December 1943. He is buried at Lingen-on-Ems in Western Germany.
