Auchinachie, George Cameron

Regiment: 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders

Biography: Son of Provost Auchinachie, Aberchirder. Born there, 16 June 1891; student in Medicine, 1910-13. At the outbreak of war Auchinachie was a Lance-Corporal in the 1st Gordon Highlanders, having enlisted as a Private in March 1914. In October 1914, he went to France and only a fortnight later was wounded and invalided home. He returned to France in April 1915, and was killed in action at St. Eloi, near Ypres, 23 August 1915. His Company Officer wrote; "He was my platoon Sergeant and I cannot speak too highly of his soldierly qualities ". A friend who served with him writes thus; "The old qualities that made him friends in former days - his shrewdness and downrightness, his thoughtfulness for others, his forgetfulness of himself, his audacity and his incomparable courage and resource - all these made him invaluable in the battlefield and in the trenches."

Burial Details: Buried at Perth (China Wall) Cemetery, Zillebeke, Plot 6, Row E, Grave 6.
