Cumming, Robert Scott

Biography: Son of Robert Cumming, advocate ; born Aberdeen, 22 July 1893 educated Aberdeen Grammar School ; M.B. (Hons.), 1915 ; one of the most distinguished students of his year, gaining the John Murray Medal and Scholarship and Matthews Duncan Gold Medal. He was a member of the University O.T.C., and was commissioned in the R.A.M.C. (S.R.), May 1914. Immediately after graduation Cumming was commissioned in the Regular R.A.M.C., 24 July 1915, and was attached to the 93rd Field Ambulance, 31st Division. After some months training in England he went to Egypt where he served from December 1915 till February 1916, and then in France from March 1916 till February 1918 when he was invalided home. He saw further service in India and Mesopotamia, but, never completely recovered from the illness contracted through exposure on the battlefield, he died in the 3rd British General Hospital, Basra, 14 March 1921. The ability which had earned him distinctions at the University won him awards in the Army ; he gained the Military Cross, 3 May 1917, and was mentioned in dispatches, June 1917.
